An operating system refers to an interface between the computer hardware and the user. This interface is responsible for management as well as coordination of the activities and sharing of resources of a computer, which acts as host for the computer applications, which run on it. In simpler words, an operating system acts as a bridge between the computer hardware and the user. As a host, a major purpose of the operating system is that of handling the resource allocation as well as access protection for the hardware. This helps in relieving the programmers from the task of managing all these details.

An operating system offers a variety of services to the application programs as well as users. The applications access such services through the application programming interfaces or system calls. The application may request a particular function from the operating system by simply invoking these interfaces. It can also pass parameters, as well as receive results of the particular operations.

A user can also interact with an operating system with the help of a software user interface such as through command line interface or by way of a graphical user interface. In case of hand-held as well as desktop computers, a user interface is usually considered a part of an operating system. In case of large multi-user systems such as Unix or Unix-like systems, a user interface is usually applied as an application program, which runs outside an operating system. Although servers usually run Unix or Unix-like operating systems, in case of embedded system markets several other operating systems are put to use.

As it is, an operating system refers to a set of services that simplify development of the applications. Execution of a program involves creation of a course by the operating system itself. The kernel creates a course by way of assigning memory as well as other resources, setting up priorities for the process, loading of program code into the memory, as well as executing the program. Thereafter the program interacts with the user or the other devices and then performs its intended function.
