Using Home Security Systems To Regain Confidence In Your Home

We see the reports of violent crimes on our television screens or computer monitors almost continuously, reminding us that times are complicated. We know that desperation drives erratic and unpredictable behavior in otherwise rational people. The fact that our situation is not improving fast enough accounts for the increased necessity and popularity of home security systems.
We have seen troubled times before, the great depression was a period of intense difficulty all over the world. The Vietnam war showed all of us the catastrophic violence that happens on battlefields. With the current war on terrorism, advances in communication technology and savvy journalism gives us an unprecedented ring side seat to active military operations on the front lines.
War has not gotten any more violent or horrible than it has always been, it is just that we have never had such intimate access to it in the past. We heard and read about the victims of past wars, complete with graphic pictures and dramatic stories, but now we see it as it happens, and it gives us a more visceral experience. This results in a steady degradation of our general feeling of well being and security.
Witnessing the absurdity of the random violence that kills maims and injures the innocent leaves us with a feeling of helplessness, which is precisely the intent of terrorism. The goal of the terrorist is to instill a sense of fear so deep that we are willing to surrender unto the terrorist whatever is needed to keep ourselves and our families secure. If as we have seen, this can happen anywhere, then our ability to live a serene life is adversely affected.
We know in our minds that most of what we see happen as a result of terrorism is probably not going to happen in our home town, but its residual effect is to take the serious threat of criminal activity to heart. We all want to believe that once we have all reconvened in our homes after our complex daily routine, that we can relax in the safe environment our house provides. We need to believe we will be protected from harm by our physical dwelling, and our government.
Exacerbating our concern is the continuing pressure to down size our standing police force. Brought on by the stagnating depression affecting global economic patterns, governments are reaching the point where they have to cut even vital services to remain within their budgets. This leaves all of us just a little less sure the help will be there when we need it.
The most obvious techniques we already employ. We have deadbolt locks peepholes and sturdy chains on our entry doors, and we make sure everyone in the home is educated not to be spring loaded to answering the door, especially when we are not expecting anyone. We try to make our purchases from reliable venues where delivery personnel have been through some vetting process to minimize our exposure to crimes of convenience.
The bottom line, however, is that we all understand that a criminal, intent on getting into our homes, will eventually be successful. Unless we have an installed safe room, end sometimes even then, we are vulnerable. The police will, of course arrive and take action if they can be notified, and as fast as they are able. When we decide, as many have, that investing in the additional peace of mind brought about by having dedicated security provided by home security systems we actually help the police, and act to keep ourselves more secure.
